Doing the Same and Expecting a Different Result

Updated: Oct 24, 2019

It’s often been said the definition of Insanity is doing the same thing again and again, expecting a different result.

We go through life doing the same things in a pattern. Before we know it, time has passed and year after year, we seem to be in the same place if not farther away for where we desire to be in our heart. Same emotions, same habits and same results.

It's okay for some things to stay the same. When we are experiencing unhealthy habits, physical pain or negative emotions for long periods of time without resolving them these are the things that we have a choice to change.

I like Biblical examples. I can think of two:

The first one is the lame man at the pool of Bethesda. John 5:5-9

5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”

9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.

You will notice in verse 5 the man was sick for 38 years!

Verse 6, when Jesus ask him if he wanted to be “made whole” the man’s first response in verse 7 was somewhat of an excuse, “…I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up…” This sounds like a person stuck in a pattern doing the same thing expecting a different result.

NOTICE: Verse 8, Jesus had compassion on the lame man and in verse 9, IMMEDIATELY the man was made well!!! He was IMMEDIATELY healed. So many times, we are praying, seeking God, fasting and doing all the things we believe will lead to our healing.

I believe we may be missing some steps like repenting of unforgiveness or working through that emotional event or trauma that has held you back spiritually for so long. One simple act of forgiveness or facing the thing you have been running from can set you FREE! It does not have to be long and drawn out. Once you identify the root cause and either repent or face it, you can be HEALED IMMEDIATELY!

The second example is the Woman with the Issue of Blood. Matthew 9:20 – 22

20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.

Verse 20, the woman was bleeding for 12 years!

Verse 21, she had a faith conversation within herself that “…If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” She wasn’t thinking about what the crowd would do or say. She wasn’t even considering what Jesus would say. She was pressing in to be made WHOLE/WELL because she was so desperate for change!

Verse 22, Jesus says to her, “…your faith has made you well.” She was made well from that very hour! Sounds like IMMEDIATELY to me.

I want to point out a difference between the lame man and the woman with the issue of blood. The man was asked if he wanted to be made whole and Jesus had compassion on him and healed him, although Scripture does not record his response. The woman PRESSED her way through with much difficulty because she was determined to be made well.

They both received a healing. The difference is that the woman was showing an effort by faith to receive her healing and the lame man was bound up with excuses and a mindset that would have left him by that pool much longer if Jesus had not had compassion on him.

Many are hurting today because of different reasons; some were because of things out of our control and others because of our freewill choices. Whatever the reason you do not have to remain the way you have been for so long without change.

These steps lead you to FREEDOM:

> First, if you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior,

ask Him to come into your heart, forgive you of your sins and be your Lord.

> Repent (turn away from) any known sin, especially unforgiveness and anyone you are holding ill will toward in any way. You take this to God in prayer.

> If you have had an emotional event or trauma that has become overwhelming and you are ready to be made whole, you can choose to be restored, break the cycle and be set you on the road to Freedom.

John 8:36 says, “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” Life more abundantly is a promise. Jesus desires to set you completely free to experience that life and be a testimony to others in need as well.

To God be all the Glory for the great things He has done and is doing in the lives of His people!
